Did you know that you can use a Social Security number to help in genealogy research?

This helpful chart will help you locate the state using the first 3 Social Security numbers.

Social Security Numbers by State

Before 1972, the numbers were issued according to where the person applied for their Social Security card. The first 3 numbers will tell you the State where the card was assigned to your ancestor / family member. This can be a good clue to looking for other records of your family!
