The Rose, queen of flowers
Most
everyone loves Roses, but are not sure which variety is best
to plant. There are many rose varieties and this guide will
help you choose the best one for you.
Modern Rose Bushes - Hybrid Tea Rose, Floribunda Rose and
Grandiflora Rose are the popular rose bushes for a modern rose
garden. These roses are known for their large bloom on long stems,
perfect for cut flowers and repeat flowering. Some popular varieties
are: Double Delight, Iceberg Rose and the Peace Rose.
Hybrid Tea Roses have large blooms that repeat through out the
season. They produce one flower per long stem and have a high-pointed
rose bud.
Floribunda
Roses have smaller blooms that grow in clusters on a bushy plant.
Floribunda means "to flower in abundance" and they
are a hardy plant that does well as a landscape rose.
Grandiflora Roses have the long stems of the Hybrid Tea Rose
and the large blooming clusters of a Floribunda. Grandifloras
grow tall and make a nice background plant in your garden.
Old
Fashioned Roses - If
you love the old fashioned rose, heirloom rose or wild rose -
a Shrub Rose will be a beautiful choice for your garden.
A Shrub Rose reminds you of a cottage rose, your grandmothers
rose bush and the wild roses you see in the country. Shrub Roses
are closely related to those old fashioned roses but they have
been improved to have a longer season of blooms for your garden.
Shrub Roses are hardy in most climates and have a natural disease
resistance - making them a perfect choice for beginner rose
growers. Some will have the 5-7 petals of a wild rose while
others have many petals of a romantic English Rose. These versatile
roses can be planted to make a hedge of roses, used as a focal
point in the garden and some will trail to cover an embankment.
Some popular varieties are: Carefree Delight, Bonica and the
Fairy Rose.
English Roses - An English Rose is known for it's fragrance,
repeat blooms, color and many petals. These roses combine the
beauty of an old fashioned Damask Rose with the repeat flowering
of hybrid Tea roses. English Roses have very fragrant double blossoms,
come in a variety of colors and have the disease resistance of
old fashioned garden roses. Some popular varieties are: Intrigue
and the Angel Face Rose.
Climbing Roses are perfect to adorn your arbor, fence or
trellis with bright splashes of color.
Few things are more dramatic and lovely in the garden than a wall
or fence of brightly colored blooms. Climbing Roses lend an air
of old world charm to even the most humble landscape. Some popular
varieties are: Blaze, New Dawn and the Rambling Red Rose.
