Historical Documentaries are an excellent way to bring history alive! I have found that my kids get tired of just reading history books. Why just read about where Lewis and Clark went when you can see it!! We use history videos regularly as an enhancement to our homeschool studies.

History Of Britain, A: 3500 B.C. - 1603
History of Britain has been hailed by critics on both sides of the Atlantic as one of the most ambitious documentaries ever filmed. Now, The History Channel and the BBC are proud to present the second video series of this landmark presentation. Adapted by the renowned historian Simon Schama from his best-selling book, this set chronicles an era of unprecedented turmoil and expansion, from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to the heyday of the British Empire, focusing on the epic themes and towering figures that dominated and defined England's transformation from a small island "at the edge of the world" to a global empire.

The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization
Magnificent! Stupendous! Simply awe-inspiring! The empire built by the Greeks in the fourth and fifth centuries, B.C. is perhaps one of the most breathtaking ever built. Not just a work of art and genius, the empire laid the foundation for modern science, politics, warfare and philosophy. Come along and recount the rise and fall of the legacy of an empire that marked the dawning of the great Western civilization - the grandeur of the great philosophers, the magnificence of the architecture, the appeal of the great heroes.
It's classical Greece like you've never seen!

The West
The film's lasting achievement is its interweaving of the two distinct threads of western history -- the triumph of westward expansion from the urban areas of the East, and the tragic dispossession of the Native Americans who had populated North America for thousands of years. To say that The West is essential viewing would be an understatement; this film should be considered mandatory to any balanced awareness of America's turbulent and glorious westward movement.

The 1900 House
Take one modern 1999 family, insert them into a Victorian London house redesigned to exact 1900 standards, focus a camera on them for three months, and you have The 1900 House. Ever wonder what living in a history museum would be like? Then watch a modern English family turn the clock back a century to cope with chamber pots, coal-stove cooking, and gaslights, in The 1900 House. This remarkable four-part documentary transports Joyce and Paul Bowler and four of their children, ages 9 to 17, to a late Victorian home -- painstakingly restored to period accuracy -- on Greenwich's Elliscombe Road. For three months the Bowlers struggle to adjust to life vintage 1900: no telephone, television, indoor toilet, refrigerator, or electricity.

Founding Fathers
The four programs from the History Channel in this set profile America's Founding Fathers, noting right at the outset they were a "mismatched group of quarrelsome aristocrats, merchants, and lawyers." The story of how these disparate characters fomented rebellion in the colonies, formed the Continental Congress, fought the Revolutionary War, and wrote the Constitution is told by noted historians, and the production is enhanced with beautifully photographed reenactments as well as intelligent use of period paintings and engravings. This is an intelligently rendered and captivating look at the men who formed the American nation.

Lewis & Clark - The Journey of the Corps of Discovery
Sent by President Thomas Jefferson to find the fabled Northwest Passage, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the most courageous and important expedition in U.S. History. This extraordinary film chronicles the story, not just of the two captains, but of the young army men, French-Canadian boatmen, Clark's African-American slave, and Sacajawea, the Shoshone woman who was a key, lifesaving member of the group. Journey with them all, across a breathtaking landscape in an experience that explores both the history -- and the promise -- of America.

Understanding Government
This set provides an excellent introduction to understanding the workings and traditions of the three branches of American government. The videos cover the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court in an informative manner combining history, contemporary commentary and academic experts providing analysis and interesting insights. These videos make an ideal introduction to understanding the different arrangements and idiosyncrasies of the US political system. A good solid educational presentation.
